What is a Ground Source Heat Pump?

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs), like Air Source Heat Pumps, are the future technology of heating your property being introduced as an alternative heating system to conventional fossil burning fuel boilers.

GSHPs absorb their heat from the ground and, like ASHPs, run on electricity to transfer the heat to radiators and/or underfloor heating as an efficient way to heat your home.

Whilst the technology of ASHPs and GSHPs are more or less the same, the cost of having them installed is not. GSHPs are a more costly option due to the larger scope of work involved in installing them.

The UK Government is supporting uptake of these low carbon heating technologies and has announced the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) to give eligible homeowners up to £6,000 off the installation cost of their ground source heat pump in future.

How They Work

Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHPs) sit inside your property and absorb their heat from the ground. Using electricity, they compress the absorbed heat into a fluid that gets transferred around your home via your heating system.

A ground source heat pump requires the geothermal pipes to be buried in the garden, laid horizontally or vertically, both of which can take a lot of space to achieve and incur costs to install.

Whilst laying the pipework horizontally takes up a larger surface area of land, it is the least expensive method of the two because vertical installation of the piping requires a bore hole to be drilled.

GSHPs are more efficient than ASHPs and have a higher Seasonal Performance Factor because the pipes are running buried in the ground, where they don’t get the same temperature fluctuations as above ground. This means that during the winter, when the air temperature is cooler, a GSHP can provide the same hot water requirements off fewer units of electricity, compared to an ASHP.

Ground Source Heat Pump Considerations

As with all heat pumps, the first consideration is to ensure that your home is sufficiently insulated to maximise on their use.

GSHPs are an extremely efficient way of heating your home, and outperform their air source heat pump counterparts for best seasonal performance. However, they require land space to bury the extensive pipework and are significantly more expensive than ASHPs because of this extra installation expense.

Our friendly MCS accredited team has extensive design and installation expertise to help you with every aspect of your heat pump installation. We can even support you with your grant application so that you have complete peace of mind that you are choosing the right heating system and provider at the right price for you.
