What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHPs) are the future technology of heating your property. As an efficient alternative form of heating system, they are fighting their way into the market to drive out conventional fossil burning fuel boilers.

With the government backing the installation of these low carbon heating technologies, the announcement of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) means that you may be eligible for a voucher to receive £7,500 off your heat pump installation cost in future.

ASHPs run using electricity and are placed outside your property. Using the latest technology principles of vapour compression refrigeration, ASHPs use a refrigerant system involving a compressor and condenser to absorb heat and transfer it around your home via radiators or underfloor heating.

How They Work

ASHP units are installed outside a property and work by transferring heat from outside to inside. 

Using a refrigerant system involving a compressor and condenser, an ASHP absorb heat from outside and transfers it to your home. Effectively doing the opposite of an air conditioning unit or fridge, rather than cooling, an ASHP warms, then distributes the heat around your home via your radiators or underfloor heating.

Unlike gas and oil boilers that tend to run on large amounts of energy and use bursts of heat, air source heat pumps are typically designed to run 24/7 using low continuous amounts of heat and energy.
